We believe Oconee County is a special place. We take pride in recognizing the amazing achievements made every day within our very own county lines. As school starts back this month we can’t help but be impressed by the rankings of Oconee County Schools. In this week’s edition of Beyond the Cupola OSB VP of Marketing, Deesha Hagwood breaks down just how impressive the numbers really are.
Are You REALLY Smarter Than A 5th Grader?
Chances are, if that 5th grader attends school in Oconee County, probably not. For that matter, you probably wouldn’t want to take your chances with any school age child in Oconee County. Ouch. Does that sting a little? Yeah, me too. But as a Mom to two kids in public school here in Oconee County, it also makes me so proud! Oconee County is consistently a top contender year after year for best school system in Georgia, and when you read the accomplishments of our local schools, it is easy to see why.
With 11 total schools, 1,036 full time employees, and over 8,000 students, Oconee County was named #1 School System in the state of Georgia for 2019. With a county graduation rate of 96.3% compared to a state rate of 82.8%, and both local high schools ranked in the top 2% of high schools nationwide according to U.S. News and World Report, we definitely have much to be proud of and thankful for right here at home.
I was enjoying time with my two nephews recently, one who just started third grade and the other in Kindergarten, both in the same local elementary school here in Oconee that my kids went to. The things they are learning at such a young age truly blows my mind. It’s quite different than the things being taught to me when I was their age. Our kids today are smarter and more capable than ever before, and have such incredibly bright potential. And for that I am thankful and express gratitude to every educator who invests in the lives of our local students and to a school system that strives for and achieves sustained excellence.
So next time you feel confident taking on a 5th grader in a game that requires significant cognitive ability, let me help you out here. Just don’t. Especially if they are a student in the Oconee County School System.
